Pipe Organ Through East and West

Pipe Organ Through East and West brings the pipe organ and Chinese wind instruments together on the international concert stage. Co-founded by Hong Kong musicians Eric Chan and Chrysoberyl Chan, the award-winning project has recently appeared at Auckland Town Hall and the Prague International Organ Festival. Its September 2026 concert at Hong Kong Cultural Centre saw more than 2,000 tickets taken up, reflecting some of the strongest demand for an organ concert in the venue’s history.

At its heart is the meeting of two “kings”. The pipe organ is known as the “king of instruments” in Western music, while the suona has also earned that nickname in Chinese music for its powerful, penetrating sound. Both can fill a concert hall on their own. This shared quality inspired Eric and Chrysoberyl to bring their instruments together on the same stage.

For Eric, who grew up in Hong Kong and spent twelve years studying in the UK, the project connects his Western classical training with Chinese music. Together with suona performer and programme director Chrysoberyl, he began developing the project through performances in Leipzig and Madrid in 2023.

In concert, classical organ repertoire sits alongside Chinese melodies and Eric’s own arrangements for organ and Chinese wind instruments. The suona brings its unmistakable brilliance, while the dizi, a Chinese bamboo flute, adds a contrasting sound. Organ solos and duets show the instruments individually and together, with spoken introductions sharing the stories behind the music.

Uniting Sounds, Cultures, and Continents

A European tour supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council followed in 2024. Later that year, the project received the Federation for Asian Cultural Promotion’s Best Music Production/Performance Award, sponsored by the Clare C. & Friends Fellowship.

In 2025, Eric began collaborating with internationally renowned suona virtuoso Guo Yazhi at the International Düsseldorf Organ Festival. They reunited at Auckland Town Hall in May 2026, performing before nearly 1,200 people. Each new venue brings a different organ, and fresh possibilities for the music.
