“Pipe Organ Through East and West”

“Pipe Organ Through East and West” is an international concert project exploring the dialogue between pipe organ and Chinese wind instruments, especially the suona. The idea was first tested in experimental performances in Leipzig and at the International Organ and Sacred Music Festival in Madrid in 2023. Following these early performances, the project was formally developed in 2024, supported by the Cultural Exchange Grant from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. That year, the project appeared at the 71st Settimana Organistica Internazionale in Italy, featuring guest suona performer Chrysoberyl Chan Hoi Yan, and received enthusiastic acclaim. Its innovative East–West fusion was covered twice by the Italian newspaper Libertà and honoured with the Best Music Production/Performance Award from the Federation for Asian Cultural Promotion (FACP) in December 2024.”

Uniting Sounds, Cultures, and Continents

In 2025, Pipe Organ Through East and West was elevated by a collaboration with world-renowned suona master Mr Guo Yazhi at the 20th International Düsseldorf Organ Festival in Germany, and was subsequently featured at the 22nd Svendborg International Organ Festival in Denmark.

In 2026, the project continues to expand internationally, with scheduled performances at Auckland Town Hall in New Zealand and the 31st Prague International Organ Festival in the Czech Republic.

Through carefully curated programs blending classical solo organ repertoire and innovative “Organ-Suona” fusion tailored to each venue’s unique characteristics, the project aims to enhance global awareness of Hong Kong’s vibrant cultural heritage, raise international appreciation for traditional Chinese instruments, and expand the expressive possibilities of the pipe organ beyond traditional contexts.
